About the Founder

Cultivated within her was an appreciation for duality. Subtlety balanced by forthrightness, reverence for tradition tempered by openness to change.
Born in Kanazawa, Japan, a city known for its craftsmanship and calm beauty, and raised in California, Mia grew up between two distinct cultures. Her mother was poised and socially intuitive; her father, a former punk bassist turned technical writer, leaned into solitude and the avant-garde. These contrasts between formality and rebellion, precision and play, continues to inform how she approaches the world.
This upbringing shaped her core values of harmony, balance, and intention, which now underpin the philosophy of Akira Collective.
Her lifelong fascination with language, particularly Japanese kanji, stems from its profound ability to convey meaning through deliberate construction. Each radical is a component of an entire experience.
Over time, she noticed her creative instincts echoed these early influences: a desire to strip away the excess, to keep what’s essential without losing nuance or warmth.
The name Akira (明) reflects that sensibility. Made up of the characters for “sun” and “moon,” it speaks to the idea that light itself is a harmony of opposites. That balance between clarity and depth, tradition and curiosity sits at the heart of Akira Collective.
In 2021, Mia returned to Japan and began working with a Zen temple. That experience deepened her understanding of minimalism not as absence, but as intentional presence. The following year, the loss of her mother prompted a quiet reckoning, one that brought her closer to her roots and reshaped her sense of purpose.
Akira Collective emerged from this journey of rediscovery, and led to a commitment to helping others find clarity and direction in their pursuits as well.
Akira has grown into a small network of editors, designers, and producers who work with care, intention, and attention to detail. Together, they help thoughtful individuals and organisations bring clarity to their vision.
Let's refine what matters, and let it speak with quiet confidence.
Cultivated within her was an appreciation for duality—subtlety balanced by forthrightness, reverence for tradition tempered by openness to change.
Born in the historic city of Kanazawa, Japan, where timeless craftsmanship endure, then raised in California, USA, where unabashed individuality stands as the pinnacle of expression.
Her Japanese mother was poised and socially astute, mindful of propriety and harmony, and her Western father was an anti-social socialist—an ex-bassist turned technical writer with a passion for bicycles, sports cars and the avant-garde. Mia was shaped by the interplay of self-refinement and play, which continues to inform how she approaches the world.
明(Akira), for instance, merges日(what is now sun) and 月(moon) to symbolise the reciprocity of light and shadow, ostensible opposites working in harmony to illuminate. This character alone encapsulates the ethos of Akira Collective: a commitment to clarity and unadorned elegance through sharing awareness of unlit parts of the whole.
In 2021, Mia returned to Japan, where her work with a Zen temple provided a deeper understanding of restraint and refinement. Immersing herself in the temple’s teachings revealed the true essence of minimalism, not an absence, but a deliberate curation that makes space for what truly matters. This philosophy has become integral to both her personal values and the approach we take at Akira Collective, where every decision is made with intention and precision.
In 2022, the loss of her mother became another significant turning point. The absence of her mother at the age of 25 left her grasping for direction, consequently moving her to study her heritage and honour her mother’s legacy.
Akira Collective emerged from this journey of rediscovery, and led to a commitment to helping others find clarity and direction in their pursuits as well.
Through Akira Collective, Mia has assembled a carefully selected network of specialists—designers, editors, and producers—who embody the principles of refinement, balance, and compassion. Together, we aim to distill your vision into its purest form, illuminating the path forward with grace.
